Exams and Quizzes:

There will four (4) exams and several chapter quizzes. 

  • Your lowest mid-term exam score will be dropped.
  • Your lowest chapter quiz score will be dropped.
  • The Final Exam is mandatory and will not be dropped.
  • A mandatory U.S. map quiz
  • There will be no make-up exams or quizzes.

Writing Assignment:   History vs. Hollywood

"Multimedia Film Analyses," using the Internet, books, movies and documentaries as resources you will pick one historical movie based on an American or an American event.  You will research the true story behind the film. The time period of the film must fall within the approximate time period of the class (1865-1970).  You will write a 4-5 page paper on the historical accuracy and inaccuracy of the film. Your paper should contain a works cited page, historical background on the topic, a movie-synopsis and a comparison of "the real and the reel" event or character.  See handouts for movie suggestions and more information.  Due week 16


Extra Credit:  There will be no extra credit assignment for the class.

  • The only way to earn extra points is to define the chapter terms and turn a STAPLED copy at the beginning of class on exam day.  (5 points each)
  • Only define chapter terms covered on the exam for that day.
  • This is the only opportunity to earn extra points during the semester.
  • Loose pages and late terms will not be accepted. (no staple, no credit)

Course Policies and Procedures:

  • Attendance:  Attendance will be taken every class. Students who plan to miss class in the first two weeks of the course must inform the instructor; any unannounced or unexcused absences during this time may result in the student being dropped in order to make room on the roster for potential students on the “wait-list”.  
    • Do not assume your roster spot is safe.
    • Class attendance is required. Students will be dropped after the 6th unexcused absence
  • Audio and Video Recording:  Taping (audio or video) without consent is prohibited. If audio recordings of lectures are consented to by the instructor, please be aware that they are only for the student’s personal use in class related study and preparation. The student agrees to destroy any recordings that were made when they are no longer needed for course work.
  • Plagiarism: A student must not adopt or reproduce ideas, words, or statements of another person without appropriate acknowledgement.  A student must give credit to the originality of others and acknowledge an indebtedness whenever he or she does any of the following:
    • Quotes another person’s actual words, either oral or written;
    • Paraphrases another person’s words, either oral or written;
    • Uses another person’s ideas, opinion or theory;
    • Borrows facts, statistics or other illustrative material unless the information is common knowledge
