DesignPLUS Upload/Embed Image Tool
About the Upload/Embed Image Tool
The Upload/Embed Image tool is one of the three tools that are part of the DesignPLUS package. You can use this tool anywhere the Canvas Rich Content Editor (RCE) is available. This tool allows you to easily crop, resize, and rotate an image.
The Upload/Embed Image tool can be found on the Canvas RCE two ways.
Option 1
On the RCE, click Upload/Embed Image. Notice in the image below that the Upload/Embed Image button is just before the Panopto button.
Option 2
You can also access Upload/Embed Image on the RCE by clicking Apps and then select Upload / Embed Image.
Image Sources
The Upload/Embed Image tool allows you to use images from the following sources:
Computer - Any images saved on your computer. See Multimedia Resources for some suggests on how you can create or obtain your own images.
Canvas - Any images stored in the Course Files or your Canvas user account Files
Unsplash.com - Search for images from Unsplash Links to an external site..
Pexels.com - Search for images from Pexels Links to an external site..
Public URL - Enter a URL (web address) of an image that is posted on a public site such as a blog, Pixabay, or a public domain image website.
Example of What You Can Do with the Upload/Embed Image Tool
Here is an example of what you can do with the Upload/Embed Image tool. Notice the difference between the original image and what the image ends up looking like on a Canvas page.
- The image on the left is the original image. I found the image on Pexels by using the search word: study.
- The image in the middle shows what my image looked like after using the Upload/Embed Image tool to crop out the background. I just wanted to focus on the person reading the book so I cut out the library shelves on the side, the floor in the front, and the ceiling at the top. You can still see some people in the background (top right). I have an idea how to cut this part out.
- The image on the right shows the end result. I used the Design Tools Image Style to get the oval shape. This helped to cut out the two people that were in the background. Now the image focuses on just the person reading and the book.
A Few Things to Consider
Here are a few things to keep in mind with the Upload/Embed Image Tool:
- This tool is available anywhere the RCE (Rich Content Editor) is available. For example, when you edit a Canvas page, assignment, quiz, discussion, or announcement.
- If the image is being used as a Design Tools banner image, the image size should be 1,100 pixels wide and 330 pixels high. This is a ratio of 10:3. Images with these dimensions will look the best and fit all Design Tool Themes.
- If a user has permissions to add files to the course, the image will be added in an
images
folder in the course files. - If a user does not have permissions to add files to the course, the image will be added to an
images
folder in user files.
