For Coastline

🌺 Aloha! I am an Instructional Designer at Coastline College. I have a master’s degree in Instructional Technology and an Online Teaching Certificate from the Online Learning Consortium. My passion is helping faculty design quality courses that use technology to enhance engagement, learning, and student success.

Since I joined Coastline as a Classified Professional in 2002, I have been supporting faculty in the design, development, and delivery of online learning. I've been a part-time faculty member teaching Career and Technical Education courses at Coastline since 1996 in all modalities (online, hybrid, on-site).

I can help you with...

I can help you in the following areas:

  • Course design, backwards design
  • Mapping outcomes, objectives, and assessments
  • Adult learning theory (andragogy, but some people use the term pedagogy)
  • Course review - I've reviewed over 500 courses for Coastline and at the state-level. I'm happy to take a look at your course and give you feedback about usability, accessibility, and quality.
  • Quality courses - I can help you get your course aligned with the CVC-OEI Course Design Rubric
  • Effective use of multimedia in your course (images and videos)
  • Student engagement
  • Implementing student collaboration in your course (groups, group assignments, peer review)
  • Accessibility

If you don't see what you're looking for in the list, contact me and we'll figure it out.

Canvas Queen

Avatar of Sylvia wearing a crown with the text Canvas queenI am all things Canvas, I like to call myself the Canvas Queen because...

  • I am the Canvas administrator for Coastline College.
  • I provide help support on Canvas related issues for faculty.
  • I am the facilitator of the course FSC150 Teaching in Canvas.
  • I provide workshops about Canvas for faculty teaching onsite courses as well as for Classified Professionals who have non-Banner Canvas shells.
  • I have been an active member of the Canvas Community Links to an external site. since April 2015.
  • I was on the evaluation committee for the Coast Community College District and for the California Community Colleges when Canvas was selected as the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • My first experience with Canvas was in 2014 and I've enjoyed exploring Canvas ever since.

California Community Colleges

I've been involved with several projects and committees at the state-level (California Community Colleges). Some of my activities have included:

CVC-OEI

I first got involved with the California Virtual Campus - Online Education Initiative (CVC-OEI) in 2014. I was part of an evaluation committee that selected Canvas as the state-wide Learning Management System (LMS).

Lead Course Reviewer

  • I've been lead course reviewer for the California Virtual Campus Online Education Initiative (CVC-OEI) since October 2018.
  • I started as a Peer Online Course Reviewer (POCR) in 2017.

I enjoy seeing how other faculty design their courses and add their own personality and flavor. It's amazing to see how courses are all different, yet they can still align with the OEI Course Design Rubric.

Professional Development Facilitator

I've been a facilitator for several @ONE Professional Development courses since 2019. I've facilitated the following courses:

  • Peer Online Course Review (POCR)
  • Assessment in Digital Learning (ADL)
  • Introduction to Course Design (ICD)
  • Introduction to Teaching with Canvas (CAN)

I've also been a course designer for the revised Peer Online Course Review (POCR) course that includes training on how to review for Section D: Accessibility

Personal Life

The most common question I get is, "How do you pronounce your last name?" Play the video below and try and say it with me.

I met my husband on a blind date and got married three months later. In the first 13 years of our marriage, we moved 13 times (he was in the U. S. Army). My husband is from American Samoa and I'm from Newport Beach. I come from a large family and am the favorite aunt of 20 nieces/nephews and 48 grand nieces/nephews.

I have either lived or traveled to places such as Germany (West and East), France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, American Samoa, Samoa, and Tonga. I've been to 5 of the 7 habitable Hawaiian islands. My favorite place in Hawaii is the North Shore on O'ahu North Shore.

My main interests include: family, faith, and fun.
