Introduction to Respondus
Getting Started with Respondus
The Respondus Lockdown Browser together with Respondus Monitor are meant to help protect the integrity of exams and the assessment system.
Using the Identity Authentication aspect of Respondus requires TWO things:
1) Respondus Lockdown Browser
Students must download the GWC specific Respondus Lockdown Browser whenever they take a proctored Respondus exam. This browser takes students directly to tthe GWC Canvas login page, and prevents students from going to other websites, printing, or doing screen capture.
Students MUST use this GWC specific link to the Lockdown Browser, Links to an external site. where they will log into Canvas and then navigate to the exam they need to take.
2) Respondus Monitor
In order to activate Identity Authentication for exams, faculty must also activate Respondus MONITOR, in each course and with each exam in Canvas that they want to use proctoring. This adds the webcam for proctoring, and fully-automated pre-testing procedures for identity authentication.
Everything faculty need to know to implement Respondus Monitor is covered in this module, but information on how to turn on Respondus Montor for a proctored exam may also be found at these Respondus Faculty Resources Links to an external site.
Syllabus Requirement
GWC requires all faculty who use Respondus Monitor to add a statement regarding this course requirement to the course syllabus.
Here is the GWC Suggested Syllabus Language, found in the GWC Faculty Resources: Links to an external site.
Proctored Exams
Major exams in this class will be taken with the Respondus Monitor proctoring system. Students must download the free GWC Respondus Lockdown Browser, using the link provided. We will practice using
Respondus Monitor before the first proctored exam, so that everyone can be confident in how to use this system and how to follow the proctoring procedures correctly. Students are expected to follow all of the
detailed proctoring instructions in Canvas, and failure to do so may result in a penalty on the exam, up to a zero on that exam. Severe infractions may result in an academic dishonesty report being filed with the
college. All proctored exams will require a stable internet connection, webcam, with the video on during the exam and an environment check, audio, and a computer such as a laptop, desktop, Chromebook or iPad. A smart phone will not work with Respondus. Any student who lacks these technology requirements must contact the instructor a minimum of one week before an exam begins, so that alternative proctoring arrangements can be arranged.
